Wastewater discharge into Puhi Bay in Hilo prompts advisory | Large Island Now

The Hawai‘i Division of Well being is advising the general public to stay out of the waters from Puhi Bay to Onekahakaha in Hilo due to a discharge of partially handled wastewater from the Hilo Wastewater Therapy Plant.

In accordance with the Well being Division, an estimated 2.2 million gallons of partially handled sewage started spilling into the bay at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The discharge was stopped by 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The general public is suggested to stay out of those waters till warning indicators have been eliminated.
